Risks of Breast Enlargement Surgery

All surgeries carry risks.  With a skilled and experienced surgeon these risks are minimal, but you should speak with your surgeon to determine all the risks that may be present.

The main risks associated with the surgery include bleeding and infection.  If bleeding continues after the surgery, a second operation may be required to fix the bleeding.  Infection can occur at any time after the surgery, and the highest risk is in the first weeks after breast enlargement surgery.  A condition known as "capsular contracture" may also occur.  In capsular contracture, the tissue around the implant contracts.  This may lead to pain as well as a poor aesthetic result.  There are treatments for capsular contracture, and in a worst case scenerio the operation may need to be performed again.  The breast implant may also leak or rupture.  With saline implants, the saline is easily resorbed by the surrounding breast tissue.  With a silicone implant leak, the material is not resorbed by the body, and you should speak with your plastic surgeon if you believe that your silicone implant has leaked.
